Tips on Finding Floral + Décor

Choosing your wedding décor can be one of the most daunting tasks of the wedding. Your décor theme impacts the look of the entire day and will be seen in all your photos. Gorgeous décor will add style and glamour to the event, while thoughtfully chosen rentals will bring functionality for those attending. But where to start?

The best questions that you can ask yourself are: What do you want the tone of the event to be (formal or casual)? What images are you drawn to when you look at wedding photos (modern? rustic? vintage? glamorous? romantic?) What about a color palette? Do you want to go more traditional or embrace trends? Above all, don’t forget to consider your own personal style. How can you bring these ideas to life for your guests?

When deciding your décor, be sure to consider: the time of year, the mood you would like to set, your color palette, your venue (lavish country club or hip downtown theater), your ceremony location (a church may have rules you will need to adhere to), number of guests attending, your budget. 

And then there’s flowers, one of the more inspired wedding-planning decisions you make. When choosing your colors and theme, flowers can have a big influence. Vibrantly colored flowers, big blooms or large amounts of greenery can add a huge impact to any rental space. Be sure to hire a highly regarded professional—a mistake is not something you can afford. 

Be sure to consider the season in which you’re getting married—this can impact your floral budget and flower options. If you are dying to have the perfect peonies in your bouquet, know that peony season is typically May and June. If your wedding is outside these months, you’ll be paying a premium for this type of bloom. 

Questions to ask when selecting your florist: 

  • Do you have a portfolio of your work? 
  • What is the average cost for bouquets, boutonnières, corsages, etc.? 
  • Can you provide rental items such as candelabras, aisle runners, vases, etc.? 
  • Do you deliver? When will the flowers be delivered? What is the fee? 
  • Is setup at site included? 
  • Are you familiar with my venue? 
  • Do you pin the corsages and boutonnières on everyone? 
  • Do you do multiple weddings on an average weekend? 
  • When do you need a final count for table centerpieces? 
  • Can you recommend any seasonal flowers to save money? 
  • Can you make any suggestions based on my color scheme? 
  • How much is the deposit to secure my date? 
  • When is the remaining balance due?

Your décor and flowers will be responsible for roughly 12-17% of the budget. This will include rentals, setup, tear down, delivery fees and tip. 

Questions to ask when selecting your décor company: 

  • What color linens/overlays do you offer? 
  • Do you rent items such as vases, lighting, candle holders, etc.? Is there a specific quantity that I need to rent? 
  • Do you have delivery fees? 
  • What is the damage deposit? 
  • How long have you been in the rental business? 
  • Do you have an emergency staff or after-hours contact in case we have issues with the rental equipment? 
  • What time of day do you typically deliver? How far in advance do you deliver to the site? 
  • Where do I put my rental items when we are done? (i.e. linens in bags, chairs on racks, tables folded, etc.) 
  • What is the payment schedule? 
  • Do you have a late fee? 
  • What are the setup/tear down charges? 
  • Can I set up my own décor to save money? 
  • What size tent would you recommend for the size of my wedding? 
  • Do you have setup instructions for tents and other such rental items? 

Types of flowers you will need: 

»  PERSONAL FLOWERS: Bridal bouquet and toss bouquet, bridesmaid and maid of honor bouquets, groom’s boutonnière, groomsmen and best man’s boutonnières, flower girl bouquet or petals, ring bearer boutonnière, parents, grandparents, readers, ushers, soloist and your officiant. 

»  CEREMONY FLOWERS: Pew arrangements, aisle runners, memorial bouquets, chairs, candles, altar or chuppah. 

»  RECEPTION FLOWERS: Centerpieces for the guest tables, entryways, cake table, gift table, guestbook table, bars, bathrooms and anywhere else that needs a pop of color.

– TIPPING GUIDE –

Florist delivery: $20-30
Décor delivery: $20-30 (depending on the time, distance and punctuality)
