Thirsty Whale Bakery

The Thirsty Whale is an award winning custom bakery in Minneapolis, MN founded by nationally recognized pastry chef Megan Bignell.  Megan and team create beautiful cakes, cupcakes, fresh donuts, cookies, and a rotating variety of pastries available for walk in purchase Wednesday through Sunday every week.  She also accepts custom orders and is ready to take on even your toughest design challenges!

We have now had our store front in North Minneapolis open for nearly 5 months; we are continually reminded that we made the right choice opening where we did! And, judging by the last entry to this webpage – we’ve been a little busy! Wedding season is in full swing right now and sometimes we feel like we are still trying to adjust to this rapid growth.

After our appearances on Kare11, The Food Network, WCCO, The Jason Show, and a few Star Tribune articles, we gained so many loyal customers and fans; it was truly remarkable to have that kind of local support. Many of you are keeping in touch with us via facebook and instagram, and for that we thank you.

Remember, If you are planning to place an order – especially for weekends during wedding season – we usually need 2+ weeks notice…For those of you who have tried to order, but were turned down because we were already booked up, please understand we just want to make sure we can accommodate the orders we’ve already taken and maintain our commitment of quality to all of our customers! Don’t give up on us, and please try to order with us for your next event! 🙂

Megan is a 24 year old graduate of Le Cordon Bleu and has been working as a professional, award winning Pastry Chef for several years. You may have seen her work in Minnesota Bride or American Decorator. She specializes in extreme custom cakes (think 3D dragon climbing up the side of a castle – she literally did that once… check out the gallery).  If you can dream it, Meg will find a way to make it. And it will taste delicious, too!
As the founder of the Thirsty Whale, Megan is the creative energy that keeps the shop going. She’s always looking for a new way to break the rules and push the limits. Our best advice? Order a cake and let her take some creative liberties. You will not be disappointed!
In her free time, Meg likes spending time with her dogs (Zita and Katie) and cats (Chyp and Kitters), going to concerts, hiking, and painting.

Kyle has been in the industry for 10 years now and has pretty much done it all.  He started out making donuts and has since worked as a cook, a baker, a decorator (Megan’s apprentice, in fact!), and even a bakery manager.  You could say he’s a jack of all trades.
Kyle is our donut man and general “get shit done” guy at the Thirsty Whale. He lifts heavy stuff and keeps everyone on track.  Because he can pretty much do it all, you’ll probably see him doing something different every day!
In his free time Kyle enjoys playing guitar, spending time with his new wife Megan, getting tattoos, and taking naps.

As Kyle’s older sister, Jen is getting a kick out of working for her little brother and Megan! Jen had worked at a commercial bakery, in retail store management, and as a math teacher for ten years. She’s never backed down from a challenge – and when the bakery said they would have her – she jumped on board!
Jen has four kids under 8 at home, so emailing and invoicing late at night is one of the only ways for her to get the extra work in! She hasn’t quite let the teacher part of herself go, as she still spends a few nights a week tutoring.

Amber is 26 years young and has been baking professionally for 4 years. She is a graduate of Le Cordon Bleu and is an award winning baker a few times over. When Amber isn’t whipping up pastries she loves hanging out with her dog George and kicking back to watch Sherlock and Harry Potter.

The Donut Crew
While you are sleeping, these guys are preparing breakfast for the office! As some of you know, working overnight is not an easy task, but these guys are working it to turn out the best donuts in the state! Ryan has been with us from the opening of our Fremont store. He’s always working up something to try, and striving to learn more. If you’ve got a favorite Baker’s Special, this is the guy you can thank!

Talia Harvey
Talia has been a part of our Fremont store from day one!  You’ll find her smiling face running our front counter on Saturdays and Sundays.
Talia spends ALL of her “free time” being an amazing mom to her toddler and new brand new baby. She is currently out on leave – but we look forward to seeing her back as soon as she’s ready!

    Thanks again for everything!

We couldn’t be happier with our wedding cake and desserts from Thirsty Whale! Megan and Sarah are very professional, efficient, and responsive with their service – it is clear that they are dedicated to their craft. Megan is SO talented! My husband and I had literally no idea of what we wanted for wedding. At the end of our tasting appointment, we had selected a variety of desserts and Megan had sketched a cake that perfectly matched our personalities and shared interests! Her guidance and enthusiasm made us excited about what otherwise would have been a ho-hum wedding planning task. Megan also created a surprise groom’s cake using just my emailed thoughts and a few pictures. My husband and our guests loved the finished product. I also ended up ordering a custom birthday cake for my husband, and it stole the show at the party! I have recommended Thirsty Whale to everyone I know who is planning a wedding, and will definitely use Megan’s talents for any custom cake I will need in the future!
